Diversity Is Normal

Martha Graham was one of the most prolific directors/creators of live performance. From the beginning of her company she worked closely with a diverse group of artists including her dancers, designers, musicians. She was born in 1895 and continued to direct and create into her early 90s. Graham had also worked as a dancer in Vaudeville which was a completely diverse community artists and producers. A zenith in the live performing arts. Martha Graham – Here she is working with the Riga, Latvia born Russian defector Baryshnikov. Here Graham is about 93 years old. Baryshnikov is rehearsing for one of her classic works Appalachian Spring. Also in the production was Rudolf Nureyev who had worked several times with Graham. Photo by Martha Swope.
